Colloquial German Expressions

Wer A sagt, muss auch B sagen. = You must finish what you start.
ab und zu = off and on (now and then)
mit Ach und Krach = with great difficulty, barely
Aller Anfang ist schwer. = Starting is always the hardest part.
kurz angebunden (mit jemandem) sein = to be short/curt (with someone)
Du bist ein Angsthase = You're a scaredy-cat
‘in den sauren Apfel beißen’ = 'to swallow the bitter pill', 'to bite the bullet'
(eine Person) auf den Arm nehmen = to pull someone’s leg
In meinen Augen... = In my view, as I see it...
unter vier Augen = face-to-face, in private
aus den Augen, aus dem Sinn = out of sight, out of mind
große Augen machen = to open one's eyes (wide), to goggle, to be astonished
Ausgeschlossen! = No way! Nothing doing! Out of the question!
Außen fix, innen nix / außen hui, innen pfui = All show and no substance

(etwas) auf die lange Bank schieben = to postpone, put (something) off
stark wie ein Bär = strong as a bear (ox)
"Ich fresse einen Besen, wenn..." = "I’ll eat my hat if..."
fleißig wie eine Biene = busy as a bee
wie ein Blitz aus heiterem Himmel = like a bolt out of the blue

Er hat einen Dachschaden. = He's not right in the head.
Mit allem Drum und Dran = The whole shebang
Er ist nicht ganz dicht. = He's not right in the head.

(etwas) auf Eis legen = to put (something) on ice, shelve it, postpone it for a while
Ende gut, alles gut. = All's well that ends well.

Ich habe den Faden verloren. = I've lost the thread (of the conversation).
Das ist nicht mein Fall. = That's not my cup of tea.
auf keinen Fall = in no event, on no account
Das ist fehl am Platz. = That is inappropriate.
Das macht mich fertig. = That's getting me down / that exhausts me.
kalt wie ein Fisch = (he/she is) cold as a fish
zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen = to kill two birds with one stone
Das kommt nicht in Frage. = That's out of the question.
schlau wie ein Fuchs = sly as a fox

Erst gehen, dann laufen. = Before you run you must learn to walk.
Er hat Geld wie Heu. = He's rolling in money.
Erst das Geschäft und dann das Vergnügen. = Business before pleasure.
gesund wie ein Fisch im Wasser = fit as a fiddle
Das ist der Gipfel! = That beats everything!
im großen und ganzen = by and large (on the whole)

ein Haar in der Suppe finden = to always find a disadvantage (or a negative) in things
Die Sache hat einen Hacken. = There's a catch (a snag).
Viele Hände machen bald ein Ende. = Many hands make light work.
im handumdrehen = in the twinkling of an eye
Das hängt von ihm (von ihr / von dir / von uns) ab. = It's up to him (her/you/us).
Was soll das? = What's the point of that?
wie im siebten Himmel sein = to be in seventh heaven (on cloud nine)
Hin ist hin. = No use crying over spilt milk.
treu wie ein Hund = loyal as a dog

Irren ist menschlich. = To err is human.

Das ist Jacke wie Hose. = That's six of one or half a dozen of the other.

Was für ein Schweinestall! = What a pig-sty!
Er (sie) versteht keinen Spaß. = He (she) can't take a joke.

Sie sind [so unterschiedlich] wie Tag und Nacht. = They are as different as day and night.
Es ist nur Theater. = It's just an act.

Übung macht den Meister. = Practice makes perfect.
Ein Unglück kommt selten allein. = It never rains but it pours.
