Ich habe den Faden verloren. = I've lost the thread (of the conversation).
Das ist nicht mein Fall. = That's not my cup of tea.
auf keinen Fall = in no event, on no account
auf eigene Faust = on one’s own (initiative)
Er (sie) hat es faustdick hinter den Ohren. = He's (she's) a sly one (a crafty customer).
Das ist fehl am Platz. = That is inappropriate.
Er hat mir das Fell über die Ohren gezogen. = He pulled the wool over my eyes.
mit (etwas) fertig werden = to cope with (something)
Das macht mich fertig. = That's getting me down / that exhausts me.
Man kann sich an den fünf Fingern abzählen, dass... = It's as clear as daylight that...
Er (sie) macht keinen Finger krumm. = He (she) doesn't lift a finger, doesn't make any effort to help.
jemanden auf die Finger sehen = to supervise (or keep tabs on) someone carefully
kalt wie ein Fisch = (he/she is) cold as a fish
Wir kommen nicht vom Fleck. = We're not making any headway (getting anywhere).
zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen = to kill two birds with one stone
die Flinte ins Korn werfen = to throw in the towel
Das kommt nicht in Frage. = That's out of the question.
Sie sind vor Freude ganz aus dem Häuschen. = They are beside themselves with joy.
schlau wie ein Fuchs = sly as a fox
Wo sich Fuchs und Hase gute Nacht sagen = In the middle of nowhere (in the sticks)
Das ist ja fürchterlich! = That's outrageous! (terrible)

Ich bekam eine Gänsehaut. = I got goose pimples (goose bumps).
Er (sie) lässt sich alles gefallen. = He (she) puts up with everything.
Erst gehen, dann laufen. = Before you run you must learn to walk.
Einem geschenkten Gaul sieht man nicht ins Maul. = Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
aufgestaute Gefühle = pent-up emotions
Das ist gehupft wie gesprungen. = That's six of one or half a dozen of the other.
Das geht Sie nichts an! = That's none of your business!
sein Geld aus dem Fenster werfen = to spend one's money in senseless ways
Er hat Geld wie Heu. = He's rolling in money.
nicht für Geld und gute Worte = neither for love nor money
Erst das Geschäft und dann das Vergnügen. = Business before pleasure.
gesund wie ein Fisch im Wasser = fit as a fiddle
großes Gewicht auf (etwas) legen = to attach great importance to (something)
Das gibt's nicht! = That's amazing! (Wow!)
Es gießt. = It's pouring (raining hard).
Darauf kannst du Gift nehmen. = You can bet your life on it.
Das ist der Gipfel! = That beats everything!
Gleich und gleich gesellt sich gern. = Birds of a feather flock together.
Was man wünscht, glaubt man gern. = We believe what we wish to believe.
auf gut Glück = on the off chance
auf Granit beißen = to bang your head against a brick wall
Darüber ist längst Gras gewachsen. = That's dead and buried (over and done with).
Der Groschen fällt. = The penny drops (he/she gets it, understands).
Der Groschen ist gefallen! = Now he gets the point!
Endlich ist der Groschen gefallen. = It finally sunk in.
im großen und ganzen = by and large (on the whole)
Erzähl das deiner Großmutter. = Tell it to the marines.

ein Haar in der Suppe finden = to always find a disadvantage (or a negative) in things
Er (sie) hat Haare auf den Zähnen. = He (she) has all the answers.
um ein Haar = by a hair (whisker)
an den Haaren herbeigezogen = far-fetched
Mir standen die Haare zu Berge. = My hair stood on end.
Sie liegen sich ständig in den Haaren. = They are always at loggerheads (quarreling).
Die Sache hat einen Hacken. = There's a catch (a snag).
einer Person (= Dative case) um den Hals fallen = to hug someone
sich etwas (oder jemanden) vom Hals schaffen = to get rid of something (or someone)
Hals über Kopf = head over heels; headlong, helter-skelter
etwas auf dem Hals haben = to be saddled with a thing, to have something burdening you
Das kann ihm den Hals kosten. = That may cost him his head.
Es hängt mir zum Hals heraus. = I am sick and tired of it.
aus vollem Hals schreien = to shout at the top of one's voice
etwas in die Hand nehmen = to begin and carry something through
Viele Hände machen bald ein Ende. = Many hands make light work.
von der Hand in den Mund leben = to lead a poor existence, have no regular income
Ich schüttele das aus dem Handgelenk. = I can do that standing on my head (with both hands tied).
im handumdrehen = in the twinkling of an eye
Wir haben alle Hände voll zu tun. = We've got our hands full.
Hände hoch! = Hands up!
Das hängt von ihm (von ihr / von dir / von uns) ab. = It's up to him (her/you/us).
Mein Name ist Hase. = I haven't the faintest idea.
Auf die (den) kann man Häuser bauen. = You can rely on her (him).
aus der Haut fahren = to become impatient or angry
Ich möchte nicht in seiner Haut stecken. = I wouldn't like to be in his shoes.
Er (sie) setzte alle Hebel in Bewegung / er (sie) ließ nichts unversucht. = He (she) left no stone unturned (moved heaven and earth).
Es wird nicht so heiß gegessen wie gekocht. = Things are never as bad as they seem.
Was soll das heißen? = What's the meaning of this (indignation)?
Was soll das? = What's the point of that?
Sie sind ein Herz und eine Seele. = They are bosom buddies, very close friends.
Sie schüttete mir ihr Herz aus. = She poured her heart out to me.
Sie hat etwas auf dem Herzen. = She has something on her mind.
wie im siebten Himmel sein = to be in seventh heaven (on cloud nine)
Hin ist hin. = No use crying over spilt milk.
schon der Höflichkeit halber = out of sheer politeness
Das ist kein Honiglecken. = That's no picnic (no piece of cake).
Auch ein blindes Huhn findet mal ein Korn. = Even a blind hen sometimes finds a grain of corn (blind luck).
treu wie ein Hund = loyal as a dog
Aber er hütet sich wohl, davon zu sprechen. = He is careful, though, not to speak about it.
